There’s something about fall in Palm Springs. The heat begins to break, the light changes, and suddenly the desert starts calling again.

This October, Modernism Week returns with four days of home tours, architecture, design and experiences across the Coachella Valley. Think of it as the fall preview to February’s main event—and a very good excuse to spend a long weekend looking behind the walls and hedges of some extraordinary desert homes.

At Canary House, we’re especially interested this year.

As work continues on the Laswell Residence ahead of its own Modernism Week moment in February 2027, October offers a chance to get out of the construction dust, see what others are doing, and reconnect with the architecture and lifestyle that inspired this project in the first place.

Twice I've walked through Peggy Guggenheim's home in Venice, and each visit has revealed something new—not just about Picasso, Pollock, and Calder, but about the remarkable woman whose passion, courage, and impeccable eye helped shape the modern art world.

One of those unforgettable moments. It was an honor to meet Frank Gehry during the celebration of his work on the Los Angeles River—a reminder that the greatest architects don't just design places; they shape how we experience our cities.

Long before it inspired the front door at Laswell, this simple concrete breeze block had already shaped my life. Found on an abandoned job site by my parents while they were in college, it became part of every home I grew up in—and the beginning of my love for architecture. More than fifty years later, its story continues, proving that the most meaningful design isn’t always created from scratch. Sometimes, it’s inherited.

As we restore Laswell, we're exploring the remarkable legacy of INAX—a company whose roots trace back to Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. It's a story of craftsmanship, timeless materials, and why we believe great architecture deserves them.
