The Laswell Residence
Rancho Royale, Palm Springs
The Laswell Residence is more than a restored home—it is the foundation of Canary House.
Built in 1947–1948, the residence sits within Rancho Royale, one of the earliest postwar neighborhoods that helped shape the future of Palm Springs. Developed at a pivotal moment, Rancho Royale introduced a new way of living in the desert—where architecture, climate, and lifestyle were designed to work together.
Positioned just beyond the center of town and near the Palm Springs Biltmore, the neighborhood attracted a new kind of resident—individuals drawn not only to the desert’s quiet, but to its emerging cultural energy. It became an early expression of what Palm Springs would soon become: a place defined by design, leisure, and a distinctly modern point of view.
The home was originally built for Maynard A. Laswell—an athlete, entrepreneur, and early participant in Palm Springs’ growing social scene. His residence reflects the architectural language that would come to define the region: strong horizontal lines, open living, and a seamless connection between indoors and out.
Today, the Laswell Residence has been thoughtfully reimagined as a showcase for the art of vacation living.
Through Canary House, the property serves as a living platform—where design, hospitality, and experience come together. It is a place for curated stays, intimate gatherings, and brand collaborations that align with a shared appreciation for timeless design and modern desert living.
Rooted in history, but designed for what comes next, the Laswell Residence reflects a simple idea: how we live, gather, and experience place can be intentional—and elevated.
